Rightsizing with Compassion: Navigating the Toughest Transitions
Rightsizing with Compassion: Navigating the Toughest Transitions
It’s been a busy season here in Los Angeles County, and while the market continues to shift, one thing remains constant: the life transitions our families navigate every day. Lately, I’ve been working with several clients who are in the midst of one of life’s most significant moments—managing the transition of their parents into long-term care and, subsequently, the sale of the family home.
It is a process that is as much emotional as it is logistical, and it is a task I take very seriously.
Recently, I worked with a wonderful couple in their 40s who reached out to me regarding their mother’s home. Mom had recently moved into a long-term care facility, and the family was faced with the daunting reality of the family home. Over the decades, their mother had accumulated a great deal of personal items—some call it hoarding, some call it a lifetime of collecting—but for this couple, it was simply overwhelming. They were stuck, unsure of where to even begin, and the weight of the logistics was overshadowing the process of honoring their mother’s life and preparing for the next chapter.
The "Guide" Difference
My take? When you are in the thick of a transition like this, you don’t need more stress. You need a partner.

This is where the role of a Senior Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®) goes far beyond just putting a sign in the yard. My team and I stepped in to act as the coordinators for this process. We didn't just discuss listing the home; we provided a full-service roadmap to remove the burden from our clients’ shoulders.
Here is how we helped them turn an overwhelming situation into a manageable, profitable move:
- Strategic Planning: We sat down to identify the goals. The priority was not just "selling," but ensuring the funds from the home would help cover the ongoing expenses of their mother’s care.
- The Estate Sale: We helped the family interview and hire a professional estate sale company. Our goal here was to generate as much revenue as possible for the items within the home. Having an expert in the house to tag, market, and sell these items can make a world of difference compared to trying to manage it alone.

- The "Heavy Lifting": After the estate sale, we coordinated with professional teams to clear out everything else. We handled the logistics of cleaning and clearing the property so the house could be presented to the market in its best light.
Rightsizing vs. Downsizing
As I often tell my clients, I don’t love the word "downsizing." It feels reductive. Instead, I prefer the term "rightsizing." In this case, rightsizing meant moving Mom into the care she needs, and helping the family transition the home into its next chapter—as a showcase property for a new family.
When a home has been lived in for a lifetime, it requires a delicate touch. You have to remove the emotion from the pricing strategy while remaining deeply empathetic to the emotion of the move. By using data-driven pricing, we ensured that the property was positioned correctly for the market, which is the key to attracting the right buyers and avoiding the "stale listing" syndrome.
